BUILD YO

UR OWN GLASS CABIN

Sept.3-7, 2020

[ RETREAT IS FULL! ]

Marrowstone island, Wa

a 4-day Building & Design Retreat

Learn to build your very own glass structure - using salvaged glass, windows and doors! Work alongside stained glass artists/builders, Neile Cooper and Linda Davis, for hands-on experience in the construction of a 3-season wooden-framed glass building.

Linda will lead the group in construction - teaching wooden framing, glass installation, and roofing. We’ll also discuss foundation and flooring options for glass structures.

Neile will lead the stained glass portion of the workshop - teaching design, process using the copper foil method, and fitting of the finished piece into a structure.

We’ll also learn how to maintain a glass structure, and its stained glass.

Upon completion, you will have the basic knowledge of how to create your own glass building. Our final structure will be used as a greenhouse for seedlings and hot weather crops (and pop-up dinners?!), and will be approximately 10x20 feet in size. The footprint can be used for whatever you might dream up!

BYOT!

[Bring Your Own Tent!]

We have ample space for camping, if you choose to do so. A common area at the cabin allows for a shared space to shower, cook up simple dinners (outdoor grill and kitchenette), and build a campfire :)

We’re happy to make local recommendations for other places to stay near-by (including instructor Linda’s amazing farm-stay, Solstice Farm Bed & Breakfast).

Check out our recommendations on where to eat, and other local fun things to do!

WELCOME DINNER & ORIENTATION: SEPT. 3, 2020 (Thursday)

Join us for a fun welcome dinner and orientation. We’ll discuss our plan for construction day 1. (If camping, you’re welcome to set-up your tent on this evening.)

CONSTRUCTION SESSION: SEPT. 4 & 5 (Friday and Saturday)

We’ll start out the workshop on Friday morning with setup, project planning, and building the wooden frame. Then we’ll install the glass! On Saturday we’ll continue construction, finishing and sealing glass and adding the roof. Breakfast and lunch will be provided both days.

STAINED GLASS SESSION: SEPT. 6 & 7 (Sunday and Monday)

On Sunday, we’ll dive into the stained glass portion of the retreat, working on a small warm-up project first, while discussing design and process. Students will have the option to collaborate on a large stained glass piece which we’ll then learn how to fit into our completed structure, or work on their own stained glass design to be taken home to fit into their own glass cabin! Breakfast and lunch provided on both days.

WRAP-UP: On Monday morning, we’ll wrap up any final touches on our stained glass pieces, fit our group project into the greenhouse, and share in a final celebratory farewell lunch together!

**This retreat requires no prior building experience. A beginning level of stained glass experience is a plus, but not required.
